ZPCS confirms death of inmate

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) has confirmed the death of an inmate at Chikurubi Farm Prison in the early hours of March 20, 2026.

In a statement made by ZPCS National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi, it is said the deceased, Gift Mbowa who was serving a 12-month sentence, had complained of chest pains, before he was found unresponsive in his cell.

Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi said they were aware of social media reports which claimed that Mbowa had died as a result of assault, and they had launched a full investigation.

“He (Mbowa) reportedly complained of chest pains during the night and was later discovered unresponsive in his cell at approximately 0300 hours.

“The ZPCS acknowledges with concern reports circulating on social media alleging that the death may have been linked to assault.

“We take such allegations with the utmost seriousness,” said Ass Comm Khanyezi.

She added: “in line with our commitment to accountability, transparency and the protection of all persons in our custody, a full and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been instituted.

“ZPCS remains committed to upholding human rights, maintaining professional conduct among its officers and ensuring the safety and welfare of all inmates under its care.

“Any conduct found to be inconsistent with these standards will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law.

“We urge members of the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigative processes to proceed unhindered.

“The Service will continue to provide updates as more veri¬ed information becomes available.”

She added that they had since notified Mbowa’s family and extended their sincere condolences.
