Government has intensified its fight against drug and substance abuse, with more than 3 000 people arrested in a nationwide crackdown over the past three months.

This follows Cabinet’s approval of a report on the national response to the drug and substance abuse scourge, covering the period from December 9, 2025 to March 15, 2026.

The report was presented by the Minister of Defence, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri who chairs the National Committee on combating drug and substance abuse.

According to the report, authorities have made notable progress targeting suppliers, distributors and users as part of efforts to disrupt supply chains.

A total of 3 193 suspects were arrested, with 2 113 taken to court and 493 convicted.

The operation also led to the arrest of 461 drug suppliers and 2 731 end-users, while 52 drug bases were dismantled across the country.

In addition, Government carried out compliance inspections in 419 health institutions, both public and private, resulting in 29 premises being fined and closed for regulatory violations.

Authorities say the interventions are beginning to yield results, particularly in weakening illegal drug networks.

Beyond enforcement, Government is also moving to strengthen rehabilitation and support systems.

Plans are underway to establish a specialised National Drug and Substance Abuse Control and Enforcement Agency to coordinate the fight against the scourge.

Rehabilitation centres are also being set up across the country, alongside increased public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing drug demand.

Government says the combined approach of law enforcement, regulation and rehabilitation is key to addressing the growing drug and substance abuse challenge.
