The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested a Harare woman for allegedly repackaging sugar into counterfeit Tongaat Hulett-branded bags.
ZACC arrested Spiwe Mutandwa during a raid at a house in Southlea Park on Saturday evening.
Investigators reportedly found a truck carrying more than 3,600kg of sugar packed in 2kg bags bearing suspected fake Tongaat Hulett labels. They also recovered a scale and packaging equipment believed to have been used in the operation.
Authorities seized the truck, sugar and equipment which will be used as exhibits.
Mutandwa faces charges of fraud and contravening Section 84(1)(b) of the Trade Marks Act [Chapter 26:04] which deals with the forgery of registered trademarks.
She is expected to appear at the Harare Magistrates Court on 31 August 2026.
ZACC has warned members of the public against buying consumable products that may have been repackaged and falsely branded. The commission urged consumers to buy from registered retailers and check products for tampered packaging, spelling errors and proper seals.
