Zimbabwe has made progress in achieving gender equality, but a lot still needs to be done as there are impendiments which continue to hinder women from reaching their full potential, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa has said.
Minister Mutsvangwa also revealed that the government cannot do it alone; hence all stakeholders have a crucial role to play in achieving gender equality.
She revealed this on Wednesday during an International Women’s Day press conference in Harare.
Minister Mutsvangwa further revealed that while the International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8, the country will have its own National Launch this Friday (March 7), at Munyarari Seconday School in Mutare, Manicaland Province.
And the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day commemorations is, “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.”
“While we reflect on the progress made towards gender equality, we must also acknowledge the persistent challenges that remain.
“Women and girls continue to face systemic barriers in terms of access to markets, finance, gender stereotypes biases, and gender-based violence that impede their ability to reach their full potential.
“It is our collective responsibility to address these injustices and to create a world where women and girls have equal opportunities, rights, and freedoms,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.
She also called on all stakeholders to complement government efforts if gender equality is to be achieved.
“This commemoration gives us an opportunity to celebrate our achievements as a nation such as women’s meaningful participation in all sectors and in particular their participation in decision making and leadership is a key driver of national development.
“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we call upon all stakeholders including government, civil society, the private sector, and individuals to join us in this crucial effort. “Together, we can create a world where all women and girls enjoy equal rights, opportunities, and empowerment.
“In conclusion, let us work hand in hand to ensure that all women and girls have the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest.”
“We encourage women to benefit from Government programmes which include empowerment of women, legal rights adaptation and mitigation against climate change, agriculture and mining amongst others,” added Minister Mutsvangwa.
She further revealed that the country has come up with the National Women in Leadership and Decision-Making Strategy 2023-2030, to increase women’s participation in Decision Making Positions in the Public, Political and Private sectors.
“To reflect his commitment, His Excellency, the President of Zimbabwe, Cde. Dr. E. D. Mnangagwa has appointed the first ever female Attorney General, Prosecutor General and the first female officer Cadet trained Brigadier General.
“Also, the Constitution provides for women and youth quotas for the National Assembly, Senate and Local Government.
“The local government witnessed an increase of women to 33%, the highest ever recorded as a result of the 30% quota at the local level. If not for the quota the representation of women in local government would have been 12% (representing women that won seats through direct election).
“This year’s celebrations are particularly significant as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a landmark in the global pursuit of gender equality and women’s empowerment.
“This can be seen in Zimbabwe, our commitment to creating a society where women and girls have equal access to opportunities, resources, and services is unwavering.
“We recognize the importance of empowering women and girls to fully participate in the socio-economic and political development of our nation.”
Minister Mutsvangwa revealed that a lot of activities have been lined up for the commemorations at Munyarari Secondary School, including exhibitions where women will showcase their products, such as handicrafts, food and agricultural produce.
Health, Financial, Agricultural and Legal services among others, will also be offered on site.
Also to be expected are performances by local artists to celebrate the nation’s culture and heritage as well as various speakers some of whom will make presentations on key issues in line with the theme.
