Contaminated Citro Soda batch pulled from shelves

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a public alert ordering the immediate recall of a batch of Citro Soda sachets after the South African regulator detected potential foreign material contamination.

In Circular No. 06 of 2026, dated 23 March 2026, MCAZ said Adcock Ingram Limited is recalling Citro Soda 702/613/858/171mg, batch number C134584, manufactured at its Clayville, South Africa plant.

The Authority noted the issue was detected during an inspection of the manufacturing site conducted by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) Inspectorate at the Adcock Ingram Clayville site, adding that non-compliance with specifications of product quality may result in harm to the patient.

MCAZ Director General, Richard Tendai Rukwata said the Authority “would like to draw attention of all licensed wholesalers, pharmacies, public and private clinics and hospitals that they should quarantine any of the affected units of the reported product and cooperate with Adcock Ingram Ltd and local distributors of the product in Zimbabwe during the recall process.

“The general public who might have purchased the same reported batch are advised to return the product to the pharmacy where they obtained the medicine.”

The alert underscores MCAZ’s role in monitoring medicine safety and preventing compromised products from reaching patients.
