ZimParks to celebrate UN World Wildlife Day

BY NEWSSPACEZIM WRITER

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) will join the global community in commemorating the United Nations World Wildlife Day on 3 March 2026 under the theme: “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Conserving Health, Heritage and Livelihoods.”

This year’s celebrations will be held at the ZimParks Head Office, bringing together conservationists, policymakers, traditional leaders, researchers, students, community representatives and development partners to reflect on the critical role of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in sustaining both people and the planet.

The commemorations will feature educational exhibitions, awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagements and discussions aimed at promoting conservation action and sustainable use of natural plant resources.

In a press statement, ZimParks said the 2026 theme highlights the importance of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants as essential natural resources that support human health, cultural heritage, economic development and ecological balance.

“This theme aligns with promotion of the biodiversity economy under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2) which positions biodiversity as an economic enabler driving inclusive growth, ecological sustainability and industrial development.

“Medicinal and Aromatic Plants form the backbone of traditional and modern medicine systems worldwide.

“In Zimbabwe and across Africa, many communities rely on these plants for primary healthcare, nutrition and income generation.

“This is also acknowledged in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Wildlife-based Economy Strategy Framework,” read the statement.

It added: “wild fruits from indigenous trees are widely consumed across Africa, either as food or medicine for various ailments, and are important biological resources in many global agro-ecological and forest ecosystems.

“They are also rich in essential nutrients, antioxidants and health benefits, with additional benefits in the cosmetics, traditional beverages, fibres, and crafts value chains.”

It was further added that Medicinal and Aromatic Plants contribute significantly to ecosystem stability by supporting pollinators, maintaining soil health and enhancing biodiversity resilience.

“Unfortunately, increasing pressures such as habitat loss, overharvesting, climate change and illegal trade threaten the sustainability of these valuable species.

“This year’s World Wildlife Day therefore provides a platform to promote responsible harvesting practices, sustainable trade, habitat protection and community based conservation initiatives.

“ZimParks remains committed to safeguarding Zimbabwe’s rich flora and fauna through strengthened law enforcement, scientific research, partnerships with local communities and environmental education programmes.

“By protecting Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, ZimParks contributes to national health security, cultural preservation and sustainable livelihoods,” added the statement.
