The Goat Breeders Association of Zimbabwe (GBAZ) is set to host its highly anticipated Annual Goat Indaba and Training Courses on October 23-26, in Bulawayo.
Running under the theme: “Preserving our Indigenous Goats—Understanding the Matebele & Mashona Breed Standards,” this year’s event aims to highlight the critical importance of Zimbabwe’s native goat breeds for food security, economic empowerment, and genetic diversity.
The event which will be held at the Grand Palm Lodge, is open to both GBAZ members and non-members.
In a statement, Sifiso Agbetorwoka, GBAZ Chairperson revealed that “the indaba will bring together farmers, breeders, agricultural experts, policymakers, and enthusiasts to share knowledge and discuss sustainable practices in indigenous goat production.
“The program will feature technical and practical training sessions, panel discussions, a breed showcase of indigenous goats, and a market and auction platform.
“A key highlight will be the “Catch them Young Mentorship” program, designed to inspire the next generation of goat farmers.
“Our indigenous goat breeds, the Matebele and Mashona, are a cornerstone of our agricultural heritage. They are uniquely adapted to our local climate, resistant to many common diseases, and require minimal inputs, making them ideal for smallholder farmers.”
Agbetorwoka said the indaba is a crucial step in raising awareness about their value and developing a structured approach to their preservation and commercialization.
“The indaba will also provide a platform for networking, allowing participants to build valuable connections within the industry,” added Agbetorwoka.
