Cimas Health Group’s purpose is to inspire healthier communities, as the scourge of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is proving to be a worrying concern, Chief Executive Officer, Vuli Ndlovu has revealed.

Ndlovu said while they would want as many people as possible to be their members, the main purpose is for them to stay healthy.

He revealed this last Friday as they launched the Cimas at 80 Media Awards at their Borrowdale Office Park in Harare.

“Our purpose is to inspire healthier communities, we would like to present that what we would really want to be known for is inspiring healthier communities.

“And this is about making sure that our communities live longer healthier lives, we want as many people as possible to be members of Cimas and the most important thing for us is that they stay healthy, that’s where it starts,” said Ndlovu.

He added that about 10 years ago, they had launched iGo, which is a wellness programme, has managed to change many lives.

“We think that this is where we should be spending our resources, our time, in making sure that people are actually living healthier lives.”

Ndlovu added that wellness is very important, hence there is need to use “our knowledge to manage our health to the best of our abilities.”

He added that NCDs are now a major concern, hence there is need for prevention as well as proper management when they are diagnosed.

“Because of the changes in our lifestyle, we now have this scourge of non-communicable diseases, your hypertension, diabetes, cancers.

“Those are the things that affect most of our members particularly as they get older. “Therefore with our wellbeing programme, it’s all about preventing people from getting those diseases, because the bulk of them, are actually lifestyle diseases.

“As a health group what we believe is to spend time saying that as many people as possible, don’t get affected by these NCD’s and when they do get affected, we keep them under control.

“Diabetes for one, it can degenerate, the same with high blood pressure, eventually leading to the demise of somebody. So all we are saying is how can we help with these diseases, how can help people manage, how can we help people change their lifestyles such that one, they don’t get the diseases and when they get them, we manage them such that they don’t progress in the wrong direction, that is what we want to be known by,” added Ndlovu.

Turning to the media awards, Ndlovu said they (awards) are a recognition of the media’s indispensable role in playing and shaping a healthier society as they celebrate the Cimas Health Group 80th Anniversary.

“As journalists, we want you to be the bridge between the healthcare world and the communities.

“Through your work, you will be able to investigate and translate some complex health and wellness issues into stories that people can easily relate to, that people can understand and people can act on.

“As knowledge becomes available, better medication is available, so people get access to medication, cures are getting better, including the cancers, the diagnosis are getting better, hence it’s important that we navigate and we look at the impact of how all those things are changing our healthcare.

“A well informed society is a healthier community hence we are launching the Cimas at 80 Media Awards in partnership with the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists.”

He added: “this is towards effort to uplift ethical and life transforming healthcare reporting in Zimbabwe.

“Today’s launch builds on our continued investment in promoting ethical, fact checked journalism, empowering health and wellness reporting in Zimbabwe.”
